Greenville’s Artisphere Named Top 20 Events in the Southeast

The buzz around town is the excitement of  another fun-filled attraction in Greenville!  Artisphere, Greenville’s Arts Weekend, has once again been named a TOP 20 EVENT IN THE SOUTHEAST by the Southeast Tourism Society, for its upcoming 2010 Festival. The prestigious award celebrates the 20 best events in the southeastern United States for each month of the year.  This is the second nomination received by the Festival that has, in five short years, become the premier arts event on the Upstate’s cultural calendar.   ”Artisphere’s success reinforces the message to tourists that we are a ‘must visit’ on the cultural destination map,” says Convention and Visitors Bureau President, Chris Stone. “Our vast cultural offerings are largely responsible for Greenville’s remarkable economic growth and community atmosphere.”  Located among the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwest corner of South Carolina and situated on I-85, about halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte, Greenville is a natural meeting place for travelers.

Artisphere’s site will extend throughout the West End Historic District of Downtown Greenville, with visual artist booths along Main Street overlooking the new Falls Park on the Reedy. Falls Park includes the remarkable Liberty Bridge, a 380-foot pedestrian walkway, landscaped garden areas, scenic overlooks, picnic areas, the beautiful Reedy River with its impressive series of falls, and two outdoor amphitheatres that will be filled with cultural entertainment throughout the festival weekend.  Within walking distance to The Peace Center for the Performing Arts,  The S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, Centre Stage-South Carolina, and the Warehouse Theatre, Falls Park in downtown Greenville provides a natural setting for the centerpiece of Artisphere.  The sixth annual Artisphere Festival will be held May 7-9, 2010 in downtown Greenville and the Festival is a celebration of the arts and all the wonderful amenities Greenville has to offer

New Energy Star Guildlines

The US Environmental Protection Agengy (EPA) has recently released the latest version of the Energy Star home building requirements.  These new requirements will ensure that new homes built according to these standards will be 20% more energy efficient than homes build to standard building practices.  The requirements were a colaboration of the EPA and the comments from Energy Star builders and Energy Star HERS raters.  The standards are scheduled to be implemented starting January 2011.

Some of the key elements of the new guidelines for Energy Star qualified homes include:

· A Complete Thermal Enclosure System: Comprehensive air sealing, properly insulated assemblies and high-performance windows enhance comfort, improve durability and reduce utility bills.

· Quality Installed Complete Heating and Cooling Systems: High-efficiency heating and cooling systems engineered to deliver more comfort, moisture control and quiet operation, and equipped with fresh-air ventilation to improve air quality.

· A Complete Water Management System: Because Energy Star homes offer a tightly-sealed and insulated building envelope, a comprehensive package of flashing, moisture barriers, and heavy-duty membrane details is critical to help keep water from roofs, walls, and foundations for improved durability and indoor air quality.

· Efficient Lighting and Appliances: Look for Energy Star qualified lighting, appliances and fans helping to further reduce monthly utility bills and provide high-quality performance.

· Third-Party Verification: Energy Star qualified homes require verification by independent Home Energy Raters who conduct a comprehensive series of detailed inspections and use specialized diagnostic equipment to test system performance.

As mentioned on www.energystar.gov, “More than 1 million ENERGY STAR® homes have been built in the United States since the program first began labeling homes in 1995.  Families living in ENERGY STAR qualified homes will save more than $270 million this year on their utility bills, while avoiding greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 370,000 vehicles.”  It is very exciting to know that homes build to these more rigorous standards will be even more energy efficent that the current Energy Star homes and that it is truely making a difference in our environment and our utiltiy bills.

Greenville, SC rated one of the Best Bang for the Buck cities

Falls Park in Greenville, SC.

We all know that most of the country has been hit hard by the recession and housing prices seem to have been one of the most effected by the recent downturn.  As different cities saw housing prices increase at varying degree, we are also noticing that some cities are recovering better than others.

Forbes magazine recently posted an article Best Bang for the Buck Cities. It ranked the top 100 metropolitan areas by housing prices, jobs, travel time, foreclosures and other key categories. Near the top of the list was Greenville, SC coming in at number 20. The Upstate has been a growing area for years, but it never saw the skyrocketing housing prices like other parts of the country. Instead the market has grown at a steady rate therefore, the surrounding areas did not experience the large decline that most of the country experienced.

There are several factors that have contributed to these mild market fluctuations. Interestingly, one of the main reasons is the prices of the auto industry in the Upstate. BMW is expanding their plant in Greer, SC and the Michelin headquarters are located there as well. Greenville is one of the few cities that have been helped by its dependence on the auto industry.

Additionally, but not discussed in the article, Greenville is seeing quite a bit of people relocating from other areas. They are moving from as close as North Carolina or Florida and as far away as California. They are choosing to move for various reasons including job transfer, family, a lower cost of living, or just looking for a great place to retire.

The end result of a moderate housing increase, a strong international presence, and a lower cost of living is that Greenville and the surrounding areas appear to be weathering the storm quite nicely with blues skies ahead.
